Chateau Prieure Lichine
Chateau Prieure Lichine
Château Prieure Lichine began as a priory for Benedictine monks. These monks produced Bordeaux wine for dinners and religious ceremonies, like many estates during the French Revolution, Prieure Lichine was seized, divided and sold. In 1789 parts of Prieure Lichine were bought by numerous surrounding Châteaux in the Margaux appellation. Since then, Château Prieure Lichine has marketed wine under several different names, including La Prieure and Prieure-Cantenac.
Already in the 20th century, Alexis Lichine arrived in the Médoc area. He was interested in the building and its land, which at that time had 11 hectares and by the 1970s it already had 58 hectares of vineyards on soils of a different nature. After Lichine's death in 1989, his son Sacha took over the company. He was in charge of directing it until in 1999 he sold it to Groupe Ballade. The soils of Château Prieuré-Lichine are essentially composed of gravel deposited by the river during successive glacial floods in the Quaternary era. Currents resulting from flooding cut these sedimentary soils into well-drained mounds, which today face the Gironde estuary.
